The 3.0 update quietly changed how Animal Crossing: New Horizons is played day to day. Beyond the headline features, there are dozens of small mechanics, shortcuts, and hidden bonuses that can save time, earn extra currency, and make island life far more convenient.
Get More Hotel Tokens Without Extra Work
The Hotel introduced a new currency (hotel tokens), and while designing rooms is the main way to earn them, there are several bonus methods most players miss.
Customize items before giving them to Kapp’n
When completing Kapp’n’s crafting requests, try customizing the item before turning it in.
- Customized items award bonus hotel tokens
- The bonus seems to scale with item complexity or number of customization kits used
- Not huge every time but it adds up over many requests
This is especially worth doing for simple items that are cheap to customize.
Invite wandering tourists to the hotel
If you see a villager standing around thinking, talk to them.
- Some tourists can be invited directly to the hotel
- You earn bonus tokens just for inviting them
- No crafting or designing required
This method is luck-based, but many days you’ll see one or two eligible tourists wandering your island.
Let Isabelle Pick Your Town Tune
Struggling to make a town tune? There’s a hidden 3.0 feature for that.
When speaking to Isabelle, she can now:
- Suggest town tunes for you
- Automatically apply them if you like the sound
It’s perfect if you want something new but don’t feel musically confident, and it’s so well hidden many players never notice it.
Always Buy Display Items at the Hotel First
Inside the Hotel, Graham’s display items are often discounted.
- Display shop = cheaper prices
- Catalog ordering = higher cost (convenience tax)
- Only 2 discounted items per day, but savings can be significant
💡 Extra tip:
Just like Nook Miles rewards, some hotel items depend on your airport color, but you can customize them later using Cyrus on Harv’s Island.
Use Side-Stepping to Harvest Crops Faster
The new side-step movement (hold L) isn’t just cosmetic.
It’s one of the best farming upgrades in the entire update:
- Much faster crop harvesting
- Far more precise
- No accidentally picking up nearby items
This is especially powerful for farm-core islands or large crop layouts, and it also works well for rocks and flower harvesting.
Decorate the Hotel for Efficiency (Not Just Looks)
You’re allowed to decorate the Hotel exterior, use that freedom strategically.
Highly recommended placements:
- Crafting bench
- Cooking station
- (Optional) Storage shed
This makes completing Kapp’n’s requests dramatically faster, especially since crafting and customizing now pull materials directly from storage.
You can still make it look nice, Nintendo clearly designed the space with this kind of setup in mind.
Nintendo Switch 2 Megaphone Trick
If you’re playing on Nintendo Switch 2, the megaphone item has a hidden perk:
- Call out special NPCs wandering your island
- Works on characters like:
- Resetti
- Celeste
- Daisy Mae
On the original Switch, this feature only produces static, so this is a Switch 2–exclusive bonus.
Happy Home Paradise Makes Hotel Decorating Better
If you own the Happy Home Paradise DLC:
- You gain access to partition walls
- More flexible interior design tools
- Much better hotel room layouts
If decorating is a big part of how you enjoy the game, this DLC pairs extremely well with the Hotel system.
Stockpile Materials Aggressively
Kapp’n’s requests drain resources fast, faster than many players expect.
Materials to focus on:
- Wood & stone
- Vegetables
- Flower heads
- Fruit
Best ways to farm:
- Nook Miles Ticket islands
- Kapp’n’s island tours (more variety, rare materials)
You’ll burn through supplies quickly if you’re actively using hotel features.
Extra Kapp’n Tour Every Day (After VIP Room)
Once you’ve decorated all 8 hotel rooms and unlocked the VIP room:
- Kapp’n offers an extra island tour per day
- Costs hotel tokens instead of Nook Miles
- Lets you visit two rare islands daily
It’s one of the most rewarding long-term bonuses tied to the Hotel.
Free Resetti Cleanup (No Bells Required)
Resetti’s cleanup service normally costs 60,000 bells per day, but there’s a workaround.
If:
- You don’t play for one month, or
- You time travel forward one month
Then:
- Isabelle offers Resetti’s service for free, as if it’s your first time
This is especially useful for early-game players or anyone who time travels anyway.
If you:
- Customize before submitting crafts
- Invite wandering tourists
- Buy discounted hotel items
- Use side-stepping for farming
- Unlock VIP perks and extra Kapp’n tours
You’ll progress faster, cheaper, and with far less friction.
These are the kinds of changes that don’t jump out immediately, but once you know them, you’ll wonder how you ever played without them.
