With Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ long-awaited 3.0 update arriving in mid-January 2026, excitement is at an all-time high. Nearly six years after the game first launched, Nintendo is finally adding a brand-new feature that changes how we interact with villagers and special characters: the Hotel Facility.
At first glance, the Hotel sounds like a dream. A new area on your island, new rooms to decorate, and the ability to invite villagers and special characters to stay using amiibo cards. But as players started digging deeper into the details revealed in the 3.0 trailer, one surprising discovery stood out.
Not everyone is welcome.
In fact, a long list of familiar faces are completely banned from staying at the Hotel, and the rules around who can and can’t visit are more complicated than they first appear.
Let’s break down exactly how the Hotel works, who’s banned, who’s allowed, and what all of this means for your island.
The New Hotel Facility: What Is It?
The Hotel Facility is one of the headline additions in the ACNH 3.0 update. When the update goes live, the Dock area of your island will transform into a brand-new space dedicated to visiting characters.
As the Resident Representative, you’ll be responsible for:
- Decorating individual hotel rooms
- Attracting villagers and special characters
- Increasing the hotel’s popularity over time
The concept is very similar to Happy Home Paradise, but instead of traveling to another island, everything happens right on your own.
The more rooms you decorate, the more furniture items you unlock. As the hotel grows in popularity, new features become available, including one of the most exciting additions: the amiibo scanner.
How the Amiibo Scanner Works in the Hotel
Once unlocked, the Hotel’s amiibo scanner functions almost exactly like:
- Inviting characters to The Roost for coffee
- Calling villagers to the campsite
You simply scan an amiibo card or figure, and that character will come stay at the Hotel so you can decorate a room just for them.
With over 500 amiibo cards available, this opens up huge creative possibilities, or at least, it would… if everyone were allowed.
Unfortunately, Nintendo has placed clear restrictions on who can be invited.
Villagers and Characters Banned From the Hotel
Despite having amiibo cards, some characters are completely unable to stay at the Hotel, no matter what.
1. Permanent Island Workers (Always Banned)
Any character who runs a shop, facility, or has a permanent job on your island cannot be invited to the Hotel. This includes:
- Tom Nook
- Isabelle
- Timmy & Tommy
- Mable & Sable
- Blathers
- Brewster
- Kapp’n
- Leilani, Leila & Grams
- Orville & Wilbur
The reason is simple: these characters are essential to your island’s daily functions. Nintendo doesn’t want them “leaving their posts,” even temporarily.
2. Traveling Characters (Conditionally Banned)
Traveling characters are a bit more complicated.
These characters cannot be invited to the Hotel while they are actively visiting your island, including:
- C.J
- Celeste
- Daisy Mae
- Flick
- Franklin
- Gulliver & Gullivarrr
- Jack
- Jingle
- Kicks
- K.K. Slider
- Leif
- Pavé
- Redd
- Saharah
- Wisp
- Zipper T. Bunny
- Label
This explains a confusing moment from the 3.0 trailer.
Why Label Appears in the Trailer (But Is Still “Banned”)
In the reveal trailer, Nintendo clearly shows Label being invited to the Hotel via amiibo—which seems to contradict the rule that traveling characters are banned.
Here’s the key detail:
👉 Traveling characters are only banned while they are currently visiting your island.
So:
- If Label is already on your island hosting a Fashion Check, she cannot stay at the Hotel.
- But if she is not visiting that day, you can scan her amiibo and invite her to the Hotel.
The same logic applies to seasonal characters like Jingle during Toy Day or Franklin on Turkey Day. If they’re actively roaming your island for an event, the Hotel invitation option is disabled.
It’s a little strange when you think about it, after all, where are they staying when they visit your island? But those are the rules Nintendo has set.
Characters That Can Stay at the Hotel
Thankfully, not everything is restricted.
Nintendo has confirmed that special characters who are not actively working or visiting can be invited without any issues. This likely includes fan favorites such as:
- Tortimer
- Katrina
- Reese & Cyrus
- Older NPCs like Copper, Booker, Pelly, Phyllis, and Pete
In these cases, it’s expected that characters will temporarily disappear from places like Harv’s Island while they’re staying at the Hotel—similar to how Redd or Kicks close their stalls when traveling.
For long-time fans, this opens up exciting opportunities to recreate classic locations, like the old police station or post office, right on your island.
The Gray Area: Characters We’re Unsure About
Some characters don’t fit neatly into Nintendo’s rules, leaving players with unanswered questions.
Characters like:
- Harv
- Harriet
- Lottie
- Luna
don’t clearly fall into the “permanent worker” or “traveling visitor” categories.
Luna, in particular, is a mystery. She isn’t always present, but she’s needed instantly for Dream Suite access, so she may be treated as unavailable.
For now, these characters remain a wait-and-see situation until the update launches.
The Hotel’s Hidden Feature: What Is Behind the Sparkling Door?
One of the most intriguing details from the trailer is a mysterious sparkling door icon shown on the Hotel’s floor plan.
We already know:
- You can decorate up to 8 hotel rooms
- Rooms can be for random visitors or amiibo-invited characters
But that sparkling door? Nintendo hasn’t explained it yet.
Popular theories include:
- Special shared rooms like a bathroom, gym, or restaurant
- A separate section for amiibo favorites
- A bonus feature unlocked after completing certain milestones
Some fans suggested rooms for the Kappa family, but that would conflict with Nintendo’s rule against housing working characters, making that theory unlikely.
For now, it’s one of the Hotel’s biggest mysteries.
Release Date and Bonus Features
The Animal Crossing: New Horizons 3.0 update launches on January 15, 2026, and it’s completely free.
On the same day, Nintendo will also release the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, which includes:
- Improved graphics
- Larger multiplayer sessions
- The new Megaphone Tool
No matter which version you’re playing, there’s plenty to look forward to.
Our Thoughts
The Hotel Facility is shaping up to be one of the most creative and personality-driven features Animal Crossing has ever added. While it’s disappointing that some beloved characters are banned, the logic behind Nintendo’s rules makes sense, at least from a gameplay perspective.
Still, the ability to invite classic NPCs, decorate themed rooms, and potentially unlock hidden hotel features makes this update feel like a true celebration of the series’ history.
Now the big question is: who will you invite first once you unlock the amiibo scanner?
For many longtime fans, it’s hard to beat the nostalgia of Copper and Booker finally coming back home.
